(What Was That)

I wanted this song to be my first post on this blog, but I was stuck on translating some of the parts. The part I had the most trouble with is actually the phrase in the title. “What was that” is quite an awkward translation, but there really isn’t a satisfying literal translation for it. I decided to go with “Why can’t I stop thinking of you”, but perhaps you can do a better job after reading the lyrics and listening to the song.
AcourveAcourve is made up of two guys, and their goal is to create a nice acoustic and R&B swirl. The name is a combination of “Acoustic” and “Groove” (Koreans love combining words like that). What Was That is closer to acoustic than R&B, but it still has that bit of a silky melody to it. All their lyrics have an innocent ‘young love’ touch to it, and it goes really well with the voice. This is again a pretty sad song, but it’s one of my favorites. If all goes well, you might be able to listen to a duet version of this from me and my good friend (LL). Hope you enjoy .

Acourve – What Was That

My mind goes blank as I hear about you,
I guess I just can’t stop thinking of you.
I can’t focus on anything I do.
I really thought I was fine, until now.

I think of you, around this time
I think of our smiles together.
Looking at the skies laying on your lap
We used to talk about what we could be with one another.

Your voice that whispered me you loved me,
Why can’t I stop thinking of you.
One by one our memories together
Find their way into my heart.

I promised myself I would not
Ask around how you’re doing.
Except it’s not that easy. I miss you,
But you seem to be doing fine.

When the sun went down, within this crowd
We used to walk, our hands tightly round.
But you’re not here anymore, and now I’m
So lonely.

Your voice that whispered me you loved me,
why can’t I stop thinking of you.
One by one our memories together
find their way into my heart.

Someone told me that
Time will do me well.
I must’ve loved you a lot, I must have.
It should be about time I let you go.

‘I love you’, ‘I love you’
The voice I cannot forget.
One by one our memories together
find their way into my heart.

I love this song. I have definitely heard this song over one hundred times, although many times it was not particularly by my own will! I was wondering what the words meant, as I always chuckled to myself when hearing “doolshik” because my friend’s Korean name is “Dooshik,” and it sucked that other people didn’t really translate it well. Thanks, man!
